Just curious Richard, How did you tell apt to hold back the kernel packages? On Sat, 2002-03-30 at 11:19, Richard Bos wrote:
Hi James,
use apt instead. With "apt-get -S upgrade" you'll get a list of packages that you need to get your system at the most recent version of available software. E.g:
Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... Done W: ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/ will not be authenticated. Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... Done The following packages have been kept back k_deflt qt3 The following packages can be upgraded:
XFree86-compat-libs from 4.2.0-2 to 4.2.0-64 evolution from 1.0.2-19 to 1.0.3-0 fileutils from 4.1-51 to 4.1-154 etc....
Which tells me that the kernel and qt3 won't be upgraded automatically, because: I told my system to do not upgrade (hold) the kernel packages. qt3 won't be upgraded because it must remove (all kde3beta) packages due to dependencies. However, they can be installed manually via: "apt-get install k_dflt qt3).
To determine the size of the package(s) to be downloaded, use: dar:~ # apt-cache show evolution | grep Size Installed Size: 21618 Size: 135087944
apt-cache show <package> is similar to "rpm- qip" but now the rpm package does not need to be physically be present :))

Usually I use either the manual update or I have just downloaded the fixed files from a ftp site put them on a CD-ROM and upgrade by using the RPM program in KDE. I have been tempted to use the auto-update of YAST2 to the SuSE ftp site, but it usually warns me that it's going to take many hours to do this. Is there anyway to see, easily, what the patches you need and use the manual mode, or just turn on the auto-update mode before I go to bed and then when I get up see if the computer is still running? I would hope that it could determine what I needed without running hours on end. Anyway, I would like to know if any of you have solved this problem with 7.3 or if there is a problem? ---Jim
