I've used a live CD. The /boot/grub/menu.lst is empty and there are no kernel files or maps or any such in /boot
All empty? Wow. :-( I think I heard of this problem before. If you have space for another install, a small fresh install on another partition, do it and then copy the files, adjusting the menu.lst for the different partition. Even on a different computer will do, if it is the same arch and version (in that case, nomodeset or no can be different). - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
