If I pull the jack half a millimeter, the "detection" fails and both play sound.

At that point I would highly suspect that the connections for the female have become bent and aren't working correctly, almost but not quite. I'd power it down, open the case, and give it a close eyeball inspection with a pair of needlenose, and maybe an ohm meter, close at hand. It maybe nothing that a bigger hammer can't cure.
