On firewall-config, open services mDNS and slp on the services tab. But also open port 5353/udp on source ports. The last one did the trick for discovery.
On yaST, hplip, Use advanced, then change discovery method to not the default SLP, but avahi or bonjour.

I find it simpler to hp-setup from hplip and plug in the ip addr.
