Thanks Anders, I checked /etc/lilo.conf It had the "read-only" line. I ran /sbin/lilo and got an error message could not find initrd= /boot/initrd In lilo.conf there were lines initrd= /boot/initrd # automatically added by patch_lilo_conf I deleted these lines (one for the normal vmlinuz and one for vmlinuz.suse Then I ran /sbin/lilo and it worked. Put the line "read-only" somewhere at the top of /etc/lilo.conf and run /sbin/lilo
