Failing that, the other test is to boot the DVD and tell it to autocheck. I don't see how to do that, but since it seems to be working now, I presume the DVD was written OK...
The boot menu of the DVD should have a menu, and one of the entries should be the one that checks the DVD itself. (... problem typing the modeset option)
failed badly and I fear will cause a lot of trouble for others as well. That said, I now am able to proceed with the installation process, (no video corruption issues) but have encountered a new issue that I am not sure how to answer. (I am unfamiliar with ELILO and was used to the old GRUB style of setting up the boot menus, so hopefully someone will be able to answer my next question. And no, no joy doing internet searches yet...)
My laptop came with two separate disk drives, Windows 7 was installed on one of them. along with a few other Windows related partitions. The second disk was simply partitioned into two data drives, which I removed. I used the SuSE installer's disk partition tool to set up partitions on this second drive for swap, /, and /home and when finished I noticed that it had also created a boot volume as well.
I think that you have an UEFI bios, so that you get elilo instead of grub in the dvd, and then that boot partition (formatted as fat). The output of "fdisk -l" might confirm this. I'm not at all familiar with that setup, and I would suggest you turn instead to the folks at the openSUSE forums, the installation-boot-login one. Several people had that type of problems and some helpers are more familiar with those than me. <http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/install-boot-login/> - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
