I reverted back to 11.1 for my host, it's a lot easier than doing

Just for comparison, I installed VMware Workstation 7 x86-64 on OpenSUSE 11.2 and it went smoothly with not a single error or warning! Since Player is based on Workstation code, you might give that a go. Since version 3 you can now (officially) create a new virtual machine.
The thread was about VMware Server 2.0.x, not player or workstation..
