I was looking through suse's support database and came across this little "how-to". Is this all I need to do to upgrade my kernel to 2.4.2? It can't be this simple: Support knowledgebase (ftpkernel)Applies to SuSE Linux: Versions since 6.4 Request: You would like to update your kernel using one of the RPM packages we offer on our FTP server. Procedure: Download the package to your hard disk (e.g. the pentium optimized kernel k_deflt.rpm) Save your old kernel and if necessary also your old initrd. cp /boot/vmlinuz /boot/vmlinuz.old cp /boot/initrd /boot/initrd.old Install the new package by issuing the following command: rpm -Uhv k_deflt.rpm Create a new initial ramdisk, which holds drivers used for accessing your root file system (e.g. if it resides on a SCSI disk). (If your system doesn't need one, it won't be created) mk_initrd Reinstall LILO: lilo If you're using LOADLIN, you have to copy the kernel image /boot/vmlinuz and the initrd /boot/initrd to your DOS partition. Please note that some modules and programs may stop working after updating your kernel. Among those known to cease working are (not necessarily complete): OSS sound systemá ____________________________________________________________ I've heard folks on this list mention rpm files, kernel source files, and proper modules and modutil files. Can anyone get me started. My last attempt failed and I ended up deleting all the rpm's and links I tried to create in my /usr/src directory. I need to know the right files for upgrading the linux kernel using Suse 7.0. Once I have the right files, I'll then be looking for some advice on installation procedure. Thanks for your time.
