Hi All
Hello Chris
I now can get my HP deskjet 520 recognized by Yast. I had to re-install gs_both.tgz (SuSE 5.1 version, the gs_both.tgz SuSE 5.2 wouldn't install.... O
it should be all *.rpm's, or did you install the sources and build from there?
well) and then I configured the HP deskjet 520 printer. Now I can only print as root (User is denied printing) and I get the emphamous 'Stair case' effect. Any one out there in SuSE land have a solution for these problems. Thank you for your help in advance.
At least this looks better. If you install from yast, you should have different printers. (rather sort of "virtual" printers handled by ghostscript) you should find a -raw -auto -ascii device at least. (if you configure colour, some colour options as well) have a look at /etc/printcap for the printer entrys. In case you do not (yet) know: unix printing is mostly handled with postscript format. Since these are expensive printers, there is a software solution: ghostscript. first, PS files are created and then interpreted by gs for your printer. printing ascii data needs converting to PS and interpreting (a2ps). Make sure these tools are installed as well. they come with "apsfilter", that handels printing under Linux. The staircase effect results from the printer beeing set to <CR><LF> mode (DOS/Win), Unix uses <LF> only. that's why the carriage does not return. ;-)) I asume for this, that you print to the "raw" device. Try to print to the ascii or auto device instead. (lpr -Pascii /etc/printcap i.e.) Printing allowed for root only: check the rights on /dev/lp?. it might be they are 600. chmod 666 /dev/lp? might do the trick. good luck !
