It downloads a description of each update available and compares it to the list of installed packages and previous updates - these are small text files, one for each possible update. Please clarify this. Is it downloading a description of EVERY available update, or only a description of updates that I need. Your wording seems to point to the first.
Which server are you using? some can be very slow and others faster. ftp://ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu/pub/suse/suse/ It's the one I've had the best luck with for my area.
