dolphin/krusader can connect via: mtp:/Paka Galaxy S9+/
mtp://Paka Galaxy S9+/ fails
and root has same failures
I can confirm this behavior for openSUSE Leap 15.0 and openSUSE Tumbleweed connecting my Google Nexus 6P (Android 8.1) via USB. The best way (fast and reliable) to transfer large amounts of data (i.e. several GB) to/from phone to/from PC is using "adb push/pull". For that USB debugging must be enabled on the phone.
