I am unable to ftp into machine running SuSE 5.1 from another node on the same subnet!
All I get is the following ---
prompt> ncftp -u 192.168.11.11 Connecting to 192.168.11.11 ...
and then nothing happens
I have checked if the interface on the SuSE machine via ifconfig and ping prompt> ping -c5 192.168.11.11 comes back with 5 responses.
ps aux | egrep ftp shows the ftp daemon running.
Perhaps some one in this list can point what to look for on the SuSE host to figure out the problem.

Hello, this is a far guess, but did you update one of the machines to SuSE 5.2, or use another dist. there? There have been changes to the standard ftp-server. rough translation from the german SDB (not yet in the english version) Symptom: After updating to SuSE 5.2, the system is no longer reachable with ftp. You get a message reading: 421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection [but you dont get this, do you?] Cause: With version 5.2, wu-ftpd is the standard ftp-server. Querys from the LAN are responded by inetd, that starts wu-ftp. If you update, the package wu-ftp is not installed by default. [in case, that is not your prob. check wether inetd and portmap are running] Solution: - Install wu-ftpd, series n from cd. read the hints in /usr/doc/packages/wuftpd for further information. - Search and edit /etc/inetd.conf ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd wu.ftpd -a # ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.ftpd remove the comment from the second line (the "old" in.ftpd is standard again) and comment the first line. After that, restart inetd. kill -1 `cat /var/run/inetd.pid` other ideas if all above fails: do you run a firewall (on the wrong port) ? cheers Jürgen -- ========================================== __ _ Jürgen Braukmann e-mail: brauki@cww.de | / / (_)__ __ ____ __ Tel: 0201-743648 dk4jb@db0qs.#nrw.deu.eu | / /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ========================================== /____/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
