That is because Microsoft changed the name from Server Message Block (SMB) to Common Internet File System (CIFS). They are both the same thing.
Not quite, with smbfs mount was with smbmount, and you had things like smbclient which gave a FTP like client session. cifs uses mount.cifs which is distinct.
