I currently have a cdrom which I would like to replace with a DVD drive. Questions: 1) What are some of the better dvd drives wrt Linux? Will just about any drive work? 2) Will the DVD drive also operate as a normal cdrom drive? Looking forward to installing SuSE using a single disk.

The only DVD drive which can now be used in Linux as a DVD player is the Creaive Retail box that contains their hardware decoder card, I do not recall which model that is but you can always check the Creative site. The reason being is that their card is the only one for which a Linux driver is available. There are no software DVD players that will work in Linux. DVD is not open source it is both licensed and proprietary. Should you wish clarification or more info you can check the following sites
Have a look at http://xine.sourceforge.net I have been succesfully watching RPC 2 ( regional protection ) DVDs for a long time now with no major problems. Ok it is not as WinDVD yet but who cares
