Recently I started getting segfaults when compiling. My memory is relatively new so I tried reseating it; the problem disappeared.
Run a few passes of Memtest86 (http://www.memtest86.com/) to get some confidence that your memory is free from errors.
I wanted to add something I just learned in the past day. I just upgraded my RAM from 1GB of DDR333 / PC2700 to 2GB of DDR400 / PC3200. I always run Memtest86 when I buy new RAM and when I tried booting from my Memtest86 3.1a CD the system promptly reset. I tried the Memtest86 that's available in the SuSE Linux GRUB prompt, and it did the same. So I went to the Memtest86 Web site (http://www.memtest86.com/) and saw that version 3.2 is available, so I retrieved it and burned a new CD. That version runs fine. I don't know if it was the switch from 1GB to 2GB of RAM or the switch from DDR333 to DDR400 that caused the older version of Memtest86 to crash, but apparently it was one or the other (or both) of those things. So I recommend that people use the latest Memtest86. I also tried Memtest86+ (http://www.memtest.org/), which is a modified version of Memtest86. It worked on my new memory configuration, too.
