“If I was sitting there looking at [US$2 billion] coming in, I’d probably be quite happy as a Novell shareholder,” Longbottom said.
“[But] as a Novell customer, I’d be very worried.”
I think that more than Novell customers need to be worried...

John, Lew, The IP issue is what caught my attention as well. (see my reply with to the announcement by Pascal Bleser). It's rare to see someone float a "trial balloon" specifically concerning IP related to acquisition of an open source project. (Granted, the language Pascal included could just be a copy from the some general announcement concerning the whole deal and not a specific reference opensuse, but...) As with all new announcements, much is just speculation at this point. We will just have to see if 11.4 rolls out on target and if updates continue to work. On the larger Linux/OSS front, I can't see this deal having much impact. There is always a question as to the impact on the distro in question. But with and opensource/commercial relationship as in opensuse/(SLES SLED), the motivation to continue the open source offering is that the free R&D and testing that the open source project provides far outweighs the cost. You can't really sell a SLES/SLED offering without opensuse. So we will do the proverbial "wait and see", but John's concern about the "thinly-held private company [where] the true ownership is not transparent" is always troubling on any number of fronts... -- David C.
