No I didn't, I said that when you want to tell someone to correct their threading behaviour, it's best kept off list.
The reason to immediately reply *on* the list as soon as you see someone screwing threads exists.
There is no such reason, flame wars about threads account for a great deal of the mail in the archives, and do far more to mess up threads than the OP ever did.
The real damage (in the sense specified by Patrick, ie hiding useful info)
You're confused. You're talking about two different things. One is the so-called "hijack", which to my mind isn't even a problem with email, and the other is the breaking of the threads by stripping out the headers in the reply.
is *not* done by the *single* person that, often unvoluntarily, hijacks the original thread.
It is done by the five, ten, fifteen knowledgeable morons that, invariably, *answer* to that badly placed question, hiding the *solution*.
A moron?
They are the ones that must be stopped and teached better:
The word is "taught"
since they are many, and one doesn't know them in advance, it *is* necessary to say ASAP to them all, and only once,
That's the real bitch, isn't it, it isn't "only once", it's a million frigging times. Check the archives. IT DOESN'T WORK AND SERVES NO GOOD PURPOSE
"please don't answer until the OP starts a new thread": the only way to do it is answering on the list.
If you do and keep doing it, then you are very welcome to my killfile
