I did some more testing and found that updated sddm package is the culprit. When I downgrade the sddm package to sddm;0.18.0-lp152.4.11;x86_64 there are no problems logging in. The problem lies with the package: sddm;0.18.0-lp152.5.3.1;x86_64. I was able to consistently reproduce the aforementioned black screen on roughly every other login.
