If you place the driver on the /tmp directry, you can do as follows;
$ sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-440.44.run --apply-patch kernel-5.5.patch
What you provided above is more then useful for me. I have now replaced the illegible instructions in my 'Little Black Book' with yours. Thanks again for your help. [I note this morning that a new version of the 5.5 kernel is available. I'll install it shortly -- and see what happens :-).
