It may use dhcpcd, but dhcpd is the server daemon. I had problems with dhcpcd and switched to dhclient (which I used with 6.4 for 1 1/2 years). You may need to configure /etc/dhclient.conf.
The system runs beautifully, doing what I set it up to do - route. But every now and again, it just stops and I have do the windoze thing reboot. I tried rcnetwork restart and rcroute restart to no avail. Only rebooting fixes it until the next time. Once, I left it overnight and the problem fixed itself. Tried that again, and it didn't.
Did you try rcdhclient restart (as root)? This works with whichever one is installed. Also, I assume you have port 68/UDP open in your firewall setup. Another thing I have needed to make everything work more reliably is to disable FW_KERNEL_SECURITY (this will at times give me an unending martian source error message (probably due to signal strength?).
