I never got a response. The specific solution I had was to put the following line at the end of my .bashrc file. export MANPATH=/usr/share/man:/usr/X11R6/man:/opt/gnome/man I didn't find anything useful in /usr/share/doc/packages/gdbm/README. I suspect the problem is with accessing the directory /usr/local/man since I can read /usr/man without problems. JDL
