What might happened is the following: As soon as you uninstall a component which provided an init script - as both packages samba and samba-winbind do - the uninstall ensures to remove the sym links to start and stop the no longer available service.
hoooold it here for a second, please! I know that yast is not perfect, but using it to remove a package and install a n earlier version should be and mostly is rather painless and does not involve erasing of config scripts.
If you delete first, there is no way for YaST to know that you intend to install the same thing again (but an older version).
If the deletion is done thru yast, just as the original install was, when a new install is requested, then yast should be all that is needed to create / recreate whatever setup is needed, just as it did the first time. Yast should not remove/modify files that it can not create or reconfigure properly, no?
pointers to start smbfs would be greatly appreciated.(smb does report up and running, winbind does start with yast.)
rcsmbfs start
that comes up as "unused". i have tried numerous rcsmb / rcnmb /rcsmbfs starts and restarts, nevertheless, smbstatus shows : Samba version 3.2.7-11.2.1-2080-SUSE-CODE11 and no services of anything connected, nmbstatus shows 0 hosts. and windows machines in the network, some virtual in vmware, some actual, all talk to each other, even virtual machines from one computer to virtual machines in another. but not to/from suse on the desktop. btw, the laptop, another 64 bit 11.1 setup, also shows the same config files, with the same content, however the laptop samba works, shows users from vms on both computers and the shared suse folders do show on the desktops of all vms. both computers do have identical build levels on everything. so, what can stop a samba that was actaually dancing and apparently still has the same configs and build levels as before? is it in any way related to the new quirk where the nfs server can only be started from the command line?
