Seriously though, I rebooted after yesterday's kernel update (not a cold boot, though) but the phenomenon appeared then too, before logging in.
It could be a video buffer, IMHO.
a very long time ago, I had a video card that kept the settings info through reboot, I could change the settings in windows, reboot Linux and see the new settings (Linux was very youngs at that time :-).
