Although dos only supports 4 PRIMARY partitions, Linux does not have to be one of them. You can install and boot from linux from an extended partition. I have my config like this... Primary partition 1 - Dos 200M Primary Partition 2 - Win95 1000M Primary Partition 3 - Winnt 500M Extended 1 - Linux root 600M Extended 2 - Linux /usr directory 500M Extended 3 - Linux /storage directory 500M Hard drive 2 Primary Linux /data 2000M The advantage of splitting up the partitions is for performance, but this increase will not be very much unless the different partitions are on different physical hard disks. Also splitting up to diff partitions means that you can unmount them and defrag when needed.
