In the end I just connected a single PC to it with a 'hard coded' IP address, configured everything, then plugged the network in.
So it (the modem) doesn't have an IP adress set directly in it ... you have to set the IP on the computer?
The router has a built in DHCP server, and so did my network, so we I plugged in the router to my network, there was some confusion to who was supplying IP addresses to who, and I could not connect to the router to configure it. Taking the router off the network, and connecting a non-netwroked PC to it (set not to 'obtain IP address automaticall'), enabled me to configure it.
