Gerry, I can't say anything about the SuSE tarbal. Havent even looked at it. I got mine from a Linux kerel mirror. My guess is, if the file name has SuSE it is a SuSE modified kernel if not it is the "raw" kernel. I haven't had any new problems with the 2.2.3 kernel. My kscd CD player still doesn't work. That started with 2.2.1. There are some changes that can get you with the 2.2.x kernel. On is that it moved the default lp assignments. I don't remember the details of this, but if (when) you find your printer doesn't work, don't panic. Just search the archives of this list and you should find an answer. HTH, Steve Gerry Doris wrote:
I noticed that SuSE have posted a 2.2.3 kernel tarball on their website. As there don't seem to be any instructions perhaps someone can help me out...
1. is this kernel any different from the "standard" 2.2.3 kernel? In other words, does SuSE modify the kernel for use on their OS?
2. the SuSE 6.0 box says that it is 2.2 ready but shipped with 2.0.36. Is this really true or are there other packages that still need to be upgraded to run the 2.2.3 kernel? If so, is there a list somewhere?
3. Redhat has posted an upgrade HowTo (with dire warnings about upgrading). Is there some similar howto or instructions available for SuSE?
Thanks, Gerry
