Just out of curiosity, open yast from a shell terminal (this is yast not the GUI version yast2) and see if you can enter in text for your search from there.

Additional info... and a correction.
If I click the SuSE menu icon button in the icon bar at the bottom of the screen and then select <yast> I can search. No problems.
But if I click on the <KDE ontrol center> icon on the same bar and then select <yast2 modules/software/install and remove software> then I cannot type anything into the search box.
Same here. Have you updated to KDE 3.5.2 as I have?
Make the 3.4.2 level a, to be correct and also more complete.
In both cases, of course, I am entering the root password when prompted.
Sorry if I misstated something previously. Gil
