If you don't mind all users getting these aliases put them in /etc/profile, otherwise try creating a file /root/.profile and declaring your aliases there.
Thanks for the quick reply! I thought that /root/.profile might do the trick; I created the file, ".'d" it as superuser (in /root), and the aliases were immediatedly usable. Wonder if I'll need to re-.'d it on my next reboot. We'll see.
