Anyway, i tried to plug the drive on the pc with SuSE 9.3.
The drive was mounted automatically, but i was unable to browse the tree of the hard disk. I tried to explore the drive as a normal user and as root, but the result was the same, althought permissions on the directory were set automatically to 777.
So i tried to add this line to fstab
/dev/sda1 /rem_disk ntfs noauto, user, ro 0 0
i created the /rem_disk dir giving to it the 'normal' permissions i gave to other removable drives.
I mounted the device but i was unable again to explore it
Right now i can only see files as root.
I think the problem's in SuSE's automount system, but i don't know how to do to read the files on the device.

Well, do not know if it helps, but I was having problems with my USB HDD when I formated it with Windows XP. Then I partitioned and formated it using some third party tools (Partition magic or something similar - do not remember now) and all problems gone... I now have IBM 60GB USB HDD, Samsung 40GB and Maxtor external Combo HDD 200GB. Every one works without problems with my IBM TP X30 USB 1.1 port and with NEC PCMCIA USB 2.0 adapter. Audrius
