It's not the XFree86 update, I can assure you as that has never misbehaved that I am aware of here. Have you tried a different kernel? When did it last work on your system?

I tried a vanilla 2.4.21 to see if that would remedy it, but it didn't help. I'm back on the stock SuSE one. The only apps I installed in the meantime was MPlayer, lame and a few related media apps, a newer version of OpenOffice and Evolution packages from ulb. Nothing as far as I could tell that should break my graphics.
The reason why I suspect it might be the XFree update, is because one of the packages was described as "libraries for XFree86" The DRI module seems be have some something to do with the libraries - I think it's named libdri, if I remember correctly.
I'm baffled, really. I'll keep digging and keep you posted.

I can imagine it is quite baffling, but you'll find it. The only thing I can think of again is to check your /var/log/messages to find the date & time it last worked for you and start your search from that.
