I am having my friend test the wireless which I do have locally.
What if any elegant solution short of complete reinstall will correct this?
Check the basics. Make sure you don't have a dhcp server issue (wherever you get your IP from). There can be a problem with a lease that isn't up yet preventing your normal hostname from obtaining an IP while a USB distro will succeed.
A reinstall is a bit drastic -- like open-heart surgery when a bandaid is all that should be needed. There are not a whole lot of things that can get screwed up on the 15.2 end -- but a lot on the other side.
Check the logs as Carlos indicated, post what you find here and we can go from there.
Nothing of the logs makes sense unless its not /var/logs/messages. A friend got it back up but /etc/resolv.conf on reboot gets restored to 0 length. The trick was to use pico and edit the file to say namespace 8.8.8.8 but that does not work now. Ill have to sneaker net the tests over to this machine. Its not the router as it works for the DV6000 and the Dell with Peppermint. I agree reinstall is drastic but if elegant does not work its the only thing. Ill rerun the tests after work.
