Updating GIMP

I've been having memory problems with my SuSE 8.2 version of Gimp ( v1.2.3) and wanted to upgrade it to the new 1.3. When I tried to run the upgrade with Synaptic it wanted to uninstall all the Scanner stuff (Sane, XSane, KdeScanner) in order to install Gimp 1.3 Anyone know if it is OK to install Gimp without the removing the scanner stuff?
