su to root and run
ln -s /opt/gnome/bin/gnome-session /usr/X11R6/bin/gnome
then restart kdm. I think that's all I had to do
I get:
linux:~ # ln -s /opt/gnome/bin/gnome-session /usr/X11R6/bin/gnome ln: `/usr/X11R6/bin/gnome': File exists

Didn't work for me either. Renamed the /usr/X11R6/bin/gnome file and forced the soft link but didn't change anything.
I did copy the /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc.SuSEconfig file to /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc and that let suseplugger start working again... Honest. Only change I made at the time to see if I'd get gnome session back. suseplugger was crashing every time I logged in.
What version is your config file? (grep ConfigVersion /opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc)
ConfigVersion=2.1 Stan
