I haven't tried any serial ATA yet, but I know that the specs on the HighPoint controller look good, and I have had a very good experience with their RocketRAID 404 (ATA133x8) controller. Only issue with the controller was that they are slow about keeping the driver binaries on the web site up to date, so I had to download their source and build my own driver. My one other issue was that when SuSE switched from LILO to GRUB they did not provide any decent documentation on the differences and issues, so I had a real hard time with getting the RAID drivers loaded such that I could boot off the RAID disks (it wasn't hard once I figured out what needed to be done).
