AJ> in /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers, and changed DisplayManager.pidFile: in AJ> /etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config so it could run at the same time as kdm. Then I just AJ> ran xdm from the command line and everything worked. I have no idea why it AJ> doesn't work in kdm :( Thank you all. I have come to the conclusion that the problem is not with VNC but with kdm under SuSE 8.1. I think the key is the error message below. Error Message ------------- "Nov 25 18:06:20 russte08 kdm[1633]: Cannot read from config reader". SuSE has changed the location of kde configuration files from the /opt tree to the /etc tree --- this is good. But, I don't think they have completed all the changes they need to make for kdm. I have an older version of NetManager that I could try to connect with kdm on SuSE 8.1 to get VNC out of the way. But I'm pretty sure this is a SuSE 8.1 kdm problem.
