Ever since upgrading to SuSE 8.2 from 8.1 a few weeks ago, I have had several X server crashes a day. I upgraded three machines to 8.2, and only the one with the Nvidia card exhibits this problem, so I am making the assumption it has something to do with the Nvidia drivers. What happens is this... I'll be typing some long missive, either on a website or in a konsole session with mutt (but it has also happened while running Applix spreadsheet), and suddenly and without warning, the X server resets, and I lose whatever I was doing at the time. This is happening so often that I have taken to doing an alt-f2 and opening a text mode session to write whatever I need and then cut & paste it into whatever X app I need it in. I look at the XFree*.old log in /var/log after the X server is reset and there is no clue in there as to what the cause was. Nothing gets logged to /var/log/messages either. I have tried running the "as installed initially" rpms for X, the stock kernel, as well as the patched X stuff on the SuSE ftp servers. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Nvidia drivers several times, but the problem persists. I don't believe it's a hardware problem, as the system was rock solid before upgrading to 8.2, never even ONCE having an X server crash. Has anyone else seen this or a similar problem? It's so bad and has caused me to lose so much "in process" work that I am considering downgrading the system to 8.1. I guess I'll try an earlier Nvidia driver first if I can find one.
