[opensuse] Why do fonts look so much better in gnome than in kde?

Hi, the subject says it all: in every version of opensuse I tried the fonts looked much better under gnome than under kde: more more readable, with better contrast and more smooth overall. The problem I have with gnome is that I detest it ;-) Can anyone explain if and how I can get fonts to look as good in kde as they look in gnome, please? (I have a faint memory of somthing involving the bits per pixel that is autodetected by gnome according to the screen resolution, maybe or maybe not??).
