Is Knoppix's speed due to it's Debian-ness? Is it using a different, lighter desktop mgr (ie, not Gnome or KDE) ?
Knoppix uses KDE by default, but I think there are codes you can give at boot to use a different window manager. Just being debian-based will not make a distro faster. However, I can tell you I've been running Knoppix installed to the hard drive of an old K62 450 MHz system and using KDE for nearly a year. It is amazing how great it performs.
