In order to keep costs as low as possible and have a fast time to market, most consumer-oriented electronics have bios/firmware which are barely tested to comply with windows certification. Most however roll bug-fixes (and in some cases massive changes) via updates. The kernel has a never ending list of hacks to deal with bad firmware, but sometimes it cannot help.
