From the XFree86 website concerning ATI drivers:

ATI 3.3.6: Accelerated support is provided for the Mach8 chips (by the XF86_Mach8 server), Mach32 chips (by the XF86_Mach32 server), the following Mach64 and Rage chips: GX, CX, CT, ET, VT, VT3, GT, RageII+DVD, RagePro (GB, GD, GI, FP, GQ), VT4, Rage IIC (GV, GW, GZ), Rage LT Pro (LD, LB, LI, LP), Rage LT, Rage XL or XC (GL, GM, GN, GO, GR, GS) and Rage Mobility (LM, LN, LR, LS) (by the XF86_Mach64 server). Unaccelerated support is provided for most of the above (except some early Mach8 and Mach32 adapters), as well the old VGAWonder series chipsets (18800, 18800-1, 28800-2, 28800-4, 28800-5, 28800-6) by the XF86_SVGA server with the ati driver. Accelerated support is provided for the Rage 128 chips by the XF86_SVGA server with the r128 driver.4.0.2: Accelerated support is provided for Mach64, Rage, Rage 128 and Radeon chips. Unaccelerated support is provided for all of the others except the Mach8 and some early Mach32 chips by the "ati" driver.Summary: All chips supported in 3.3.6 are supported in 4.0.2 except for Mach8 and some old Mach32 chips. Anyone have hardware 3d working on an ATI All-in-Wonder 128 card under SuSE 7.1? I did a test install (from scratch to a new drive) of the 2.4 kernel and XFree 4.0.2. but 3d doesn't seem to be working for either Heavy Gear II or Q3 (the only 2 3d games I have), even though I get messages to the effect that DRI is loaded when X starts up.
I had an ATI AIW 128 Pro and had the same problem. I was told that 3D hardware acceleration for the r128 chipset wasn't due out until XFree 4.1. 3Ddiag couldn't find any 3D capable chipset either, so I switched to a Diamond Viper V770 and haven't had any problems since.
What else could I check? I just installed everything today so I'm still a bit clueless about the new X setup, and this is my first experience with 2.4 as well. I did have both of these games working on the same hardware w/a 2.2 kernel and Xi's X server though, and I read through the "DRI User Guide". ( http://www.xfree86.org/4.0.1/DRI.html ) From what I can tell, everything seems ok cwexcepth that when I try to run /usr/bin/gears it segfaults. 2d support seems fine.
I didn't try my card with 2.4, so I can't comment about that, but I never had a segfault with gears, just horrendous fps...
.. so there's definitely a pattern here; I'm just not sure what to make of it. (libGL problem maybe? There is a /usr/lib/libGL.so from the xf86glxd.rpm there. Is that the right one?)
Have you run 3Ddiag? This will tell you which switch2xxx script to run to enable 3D, or tell you if any packages (i.e. mesasoft) are missing.
Hope that helps!
