RAID 5 configuration

Hi, I have a suse8.2 running on dell power 1600scm, Dual processors 3.2GHz, 1GB RAM,with PERC4 controller(RAID 5 configuration). I am noticing slow write speed, like copying file from location to another or untar compressed files,I know that writing speed in RAID 5 is slower than normal configuration. 1-how can i know that my RAID 5 configuration are correct? can i increase the writing speed 2- how can i make check that the server is using the dual processors.
