Julian Sorry Julian, I sort of mentioned it in an earlier post but didn't say SOLVED. the answer was in the error message:
Try adding "echo 1024 > /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq" to your system startup scripts. I actually added a new script called RTC to /etc/sysconfig and it includes that line.
