On the other hand, going forward I suggest to not setup a separate /usr anymore, there's no benefit in it. Backups? More to the point, management of backups.
Oh, right, you've got some Sony DAT tape thing that can take half a terabyte and a budget for an endless supply of tapes ...
Unlike many of us ... I don't understand how a separate /usr helps with backups. Could you elaborate, please?
Ah, you're thinking in terms of backup by tree, by file walking. And copying live files. Perhaps while they are open. Or and index and data pair getting copied 'out of sync'. Risky. Think about it.
As I keep saying, I use LVM, so my idea of a backup is a snapshot of a 'partition'. More atomic.
The two ideas are orthogonal. You can snapshot the LVM and then backup selected files just as you would with live files.
I try to get my partitions to be around 5G so that I can copy the snapshots to DVD.
But again, you just need to select 5 GB of files, not complete partitions.
The result is a DVD that has a mountable file system, so retrieving files is easy.
And so is a DVD produced in the way I describe. You're (presumably) going to be mounting the backup filesystem at some place such as /mnt/backup, not in the original position (e.g. /usr) if you want to recover some or all files. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
