Pretty much all searches go a lot faster if they're in memory rather than backing store, even if the backing store these days is SSD.
I wonder what is the time cost if they are in NVMe media. That stuff is directly addressable on the i/o bus. Not as fast as RAM, but the difference is not that big as it was.
