The conditions under which that is helpful are limited.
It may be that an application is asking the display layer that Xorg uses to do something pernicious.
It may be that your video driver has a syndromic bug.

What display hardware/driver do you use?
nVidia 9600GT using proprietary nvidia drivers.
If you use KDE, then
systemsettings -> Desktop effects
use the 'advanced' tab
The first two options let you alter how the kwin layer works.
openGL vs raster
and
Qt graphics being native or raster.
Interesting. I found I was using openGL 2.0. I changed this to openGL 3.1. Will report back after a suitable test interval.
Presumably similar exists for Gnome.
I don't use Gnome
I can't say what combination works for who/what/when. its a YMMV thing. But there you are, try that.
