As I said in my original post, she isn't, she does it all MANUALLY. I would assume that there are still modems made that can read the caller ID, but I haven't used a modem in so long, I am no longer familiar with what is now available or their features. She uses the caller ID list ON HER PHONE and reads the list and TYPES the info into a text document on her computer. I want to automate that.
This can be done with mgetty and is relatively simple. How the call is handled; auto answer, recorded message, logging etc... can be also be setup. Its a long time since I set it up, but it worked a treat and I have some notes somewhere if you are interested. HTH Al
Thank you.... at the moment, all options are open and I'm interested in all solutions. She has NO modem currently as she uses road-runner to connect to the internet and has never used a modem. So, while she has a phone that displays caller ID and logs it to its' memory, the phone won't output it. I would assume plugging in a modem or fax or other device could capture and send it to a USB or serial port where appropriate software could capture it to a file or SQL or somewhere. All ideas are welcome at this point, especially systems which include hardware/softare combos. If it adds other features like FAX, that would be a bonus, but the bottom line is that it be able to capture CALLER-ID in a form that I could import into a database program like SQL or OpenOffice's Base or MySQL or whatever. Any other features would be gravy. Way back when, I was one of the developers of QuickBBS, along with Steve Gabrilowitz after we got the base code from the original author after he discovered 'girls' :) so I/we predate the internet, but I had a stroke and my mental abilities are a fraction of what they used to be. One thing I learned though, Stay away from M$ like the plague and there is little or nothing the Linux community can't do when it tries. I am still recovering and am a bit slow at times and there is a big gap in what I knew and what I should know about this stuff, but I know enough to ask questions of you guys. My friend knows less about Linux than I do. She was Windoze-centric but gave in to my nagging <grin> and when she saw how a brain-dead ex college professor could make Linux do real work, she took the plunge. PM Mail conversion has been a real booger for me (temporarily running it in a virtual machine until I can capture her thousands of contacts and tens of thousands of messages with 'tidbits' of information) and import it into Thunderbird and eventually a database program like MySQL or Base or some such. But the MANUAL effort she puts in for CALLER ID I know can be handled electrically because I used to do it, but that was years ago under Windows on a US Robotics modem. I rather doubt it would work the same in Linux. Thus, ALL options are open and if you have a solution involving mgetty or other utility and a suggestion regarding a fax modem, I'm all ears .... er... eyes :) Thanks to all.
