The end of pop3 on gmail?

Hello, I've searched on google for a solution but from what I've read, it seems like thunderbird will no longer be able to access gmail accounts using pop3.  I received a notice from google, that after May 30 I will no longer be ale to retrieve mail using username/password.  Oauth 2.0 apparently is only available for imap and not pop3 and 2sv with app passwords is not possible with thunderbird. Is there an alternative way to keep using  thunderbird with pop3, so as to not have to leave mail on google's servers?
