Hi LenZ Everything went well and smooth . See my reply to Anthony Gunia. Maybe you can fill me in on a program what monitors this card? Thanks very much for your input. -- Greetings from /bill at 169 west , 19 south. My holy cow is a penguin. On Wednesday 25 June 2003 23:23, Lenz Grimmer wrote:

Hi,

After reiving on this morning about this wireless island, I have to find a solution now to hook in to this.
As most ( apart from two) computers here run Windoze I have to get my wireless card working or if I cannot I have to go back to W$$%^. The wireless PCI adapter I have here is a Netgear 11Mbs 802.11b 32 bit PCI MA311. ( again the SuSe hardware database is not very helpfull)
Does anyone know if this will work with my SuSE 8.2? Or have any other recommendation?
Works perfectly here in combination with a NetGear MA401 PCMCIA card:
00:0a.0 Network controller: Netgear 802.11b Wireless Adapter (MA301) (rev 02)
As it's not seen as a PCMCIA bridge but a regular PCI network card, I simply added the following to /etc/modules.conf:
alias eth1 orinoco_plx
(eth0 is my primary network card - I use this PC as a router between my DSL line and my Laptop equipped with another MA401)
The only problem with this is that YaST does not automatically recognize it as a wireless network device (I already filed a bug report about this). You have to configure it manually by creating /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth1 (if it's eth1 for you, too) with an editor first (see /etc/sysconfig/network/wireless and /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg.template for examples). Mine looks as follows (slightly obfuscated):
BOOTPROTO='static' BROADCAST='10.10.0.255' IPADDR='10.10.0.1' MTU='' NETMASK='255.255.255.0' NETWORK='10.10.0.0' REMOTE_IPADDR='' STARTMODE='onboot' UNIQUE='bSAa.wy92p+qly6C' WIRELESS='yes' WIRELESS_ESSID='foo' WIRELESS_KEY='1234-5678-9012-3456-7890-1234-56' WIRELESS_MODE='Ad-hoc' WIRELESS_NICK='bar' WIRELESS_NWID=''
After the file has been created, you can later edit with YaST as well.
Note that I configured mine as an 'ad-hoc' network, meaning that only my desktop and Laptop can talk to each other. I plan to toy around with the hostap driver soon (not part of SuSE Linux yet), to be able to set up a full Access Point for multiple WLAN devices: http://hostap.epitest.fi/
