- if I wish to install, say, InkScape, I go to the OpenSuSE build/search for software page. I search for Inkscape and I get 39 binaries to choose from.
I tend to select the first one listed. Although some time, that package does not nave the newest version number.
What is the correct approach for selecting? What does "educational" mean - in the case of inkscape, that's the 2nd choice..?
Basically it depends on what you're looking for. The key thing to check here is: (i) which repository it comes from (ii) which version it is "openSUSE:10.3/standard" is the official OSS repository. If in doubt, use this one. Education:blah is the Education build service repository. The GNOME: packagers also seem to (again, in the build service). There is no major version change between the official OSS repository one and the build service one, so it might have a few extra fixes but it isn't a new upstream version. Basically, the build service can provide many extra packages or updates of packages, but note that these are unsupported. In this case you might want to go with the supported package from the OSS repository.
