I have just done a few things in the meantime: I booted ubuntu 18.04 desktop live USB and I have eno1 and eno2 Both NICs appear to be working fine.... I have updated the BIOS to the latest one from Intel. I have reset the CMOS and configured BIOS settings again. I have reformatted the hard disk and I am currently re-installing ubuntu 18.04.1 from the latest ISO release.
